Best Furnace or Best Furnace Brand or Best Furnace Confused?

Finding the best Furnace a daunting task?

Finding an honest furnace or air conditioner review on the internet or in person is hard because everyone is biased in one way or another. If you are looking for the best furnace this is my opinion with facts that I have accumulated over the last 20 years. Take it or leave it. The best furnace for me might not be the best furnace for you, but I have installed a plenty so you might wanna just a listen up
I have been repairing and installing furnaces and air conditioners for well over 20 years so I have a good amount of experience in the subject. I started plumbing when I was 14 with my grandfather.
I have found that furnaces have evolved over the years to a point now where the manufacturers are offering a high quality product that will last many years. When high efficiency furnaces first came out, each manufacturer had its own idea on how to build a furnace and by trial and error they slowly worked out the problems to where now they are all are building a decent to good  furnace.  Most of them using the same or similar parts
The furnace manufacturers in America actually just build the heat exchanger, cabinet, housings etc. They buy the burners, controls, limit switches, draft inducers, pressure controls, gas valves, circuit boards, motors, ignition controls, and hot surface igniters from the companies that build them like GE, Honeywell, White Rodgers, Robertshaw, etc. Are you starting to get a picture of who sells the best furnace. If they are all using the same part but the cabinet we are in need of finding a demarcation to ascertain who really has the best furnace
You generally read comments about furnace brands that have a negative twist. This is because people who have had a bad experience tend to have the drive to tell the world about it while the people who are satisfied are content to leave it at that. The truth is every brand has to be repaired now and then and since the manufacturers who build the main working parts of the furnaces build them for every furnace manufacturer, I do not see a big difference in number of repairs from one brand to the next. What does make a difference is the installer. To find the best furnace you will for sure have to find one of the best furnace installers.
Then how should you choose which furnace brand to buy? It is important to purchase your furnace from someone you can trust to install it properly and who will back up the warranty if something should go wrong later on. I recommend that you try to buy locally so you are important to the business that you are buying from and not just another anonymous customer who does not matter. The manufacturers warranty is a big factor to look at. If the furnace does break in the future, you don’t want to be stuck with a large repair bill. Today you can find lifetime warranties on heat exchangers and 10 years on all other parts. If they don’t offer this warranty, keep looking because some do and it is better to let the manufacturer pay for the repair instead of you. After all if they spend all of that money on advertising trying to convince you to buy their furnace let them back it up with a good warranty!
Don’t pay for your furnace over and over again with high gas bills. There are two somewhat standard efficiency ratings on furnaces that are sold today, 80% and 95%. You can think of the difference as being this: for every dollar that you pay your utility company for natural gas for your furnace, with the 80% model, 80 cents out of every dollar heats the house and 20 cents is wasted up the chimney. While the 95% efficiency model only loses 5 cents out of every dollar out the vent. So can see over time the amount of money you can save by installing a 95% furnace will easily pay for the difference in price over the 80% model and save you money every year after that.
I have installed many brands of furnaces over the years and have narrowed my offerings down to one brand. I now only install Goodman furnaces and air conditioners because I have found no better unit on the market that offers the price and warranty that I believe my customers want. Some of my customers have not heard of Goodman furnaces and air conditioners because of their lack of consumer advertising. This a plus, because who wants to pay for all of the expensive advertising that gets passed down to the consumer in the form of higher prices? Goodman had sales of 1.9 billion dollars last year and with out all of those expensive ads. You must be doing something right to become one of the largest manufacturers of furnaces in the United States with out all kinds of advertising. I also like the way Goodman backs me up if I need a warranty part without undue paperwork or making it difficult to return the part.
Why is Goodman the best furnace in my opinion? Here is a warrenty story. I have had Goodman replace a whole furnace for free because they could not get the heat exchanger to the home in time for the customer to get heat. Now I droped every line of furnace after that occured. I have had installs that I never received a call to repair the furnace even after 10 years of being in place. Now thats the best furnace to me.
All furnace manufacturers have websites that you can review their products.
The thing to watch out for while you look for a new furnace is not to be sucked in by a celebrity on tv who is trying to convince you that one brand is better than the next without telling you the things that matter like warranty and price.
I hope this clears up some of the confusion in trying to pick one brand over another.

Yes it does does matter

Buying a Furnace

Many people buy their first furnace without even realizing it. They buy a house with their furnace already installed. Many people buy their second furnace with the same amount of thought — they open their phone book and call the first HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning) contractor on the list. This strategy is likely to net you a furnace that will keep your house warm. But you are also likely to spend hundreds, if not thousands of dollars more than necessary.

Are you paying the best price for your furnace?

There are several ways to reduce the cost of purchasing and installing a new furnace.

Encourage several HVAC contractors to compete for your business. However, keep in mind that you rarely want to make your decision based on up-front price alone. Choosing a reputable HVAC contractor is as important in determining your overall satisfaction and cost as choosing an appropriate furnace.

Many public and private entities in the US and Canada offer rebates and financing incentives for the purchase of a furnace. Make sure you find out whether your purchase qualifies.

Savvy furnace shoppers generally consider several criteria:

Is your furnace correctly sized?

Are you buying an appropriately efficient furnace?

Are you getting the best price for your furnace?

Is your furnace correctly sized?

An oversized furnace (one whose capacity is too large) costs substantially more to operate than a correctly sized furnace. This is because oversized furnaces typically cycle on and off more often than correctly sized furnaces, and cycling on and off is more expensive than running at steady state.

The only way to know if your furnace is correctly sized is for your HVAC contractor to do a load calculation. A load calculation takes into account the size of your house, the insulation value of your windows, the amount of insulation in your walls and roof, and a host of other criteria to determine the appropriate furnace capacity.

Ask your HVAC contractor if s/he performed a load calculation before you accept the furnace that recommend. If you are replacing an old furnace (as opposed to buying a furnace for a new home you are constructing) they may argue that they chose a furnace as big as your last furnace. But your old furnace might be too large for your house. Request that they perform a load calculation, and find another contractor if they refuse.

Is the efficiency of your furnace appropriate for your house?

FurnaceCompare.com subscribers get access to the following:

Comprehensive data on the efficiency of more than 17,500 furnaces.

Detailed instructions on how to calculate whether a high-efficiency furnace makes sense in their situation.

High efficiency furnaces typically cost more than average and low- efficiency furnaces. However, they tend to cost less to operate on a month to month basis as they use less fuel to generate the same amount of heat. Therefore, after a given payoff period, high efficiency furnaces tend to cost less than low efficiency furnaces.

However, high efficiency furnaces may not always be the most appropriate choice. (Your 90% efficient furnace will cost you more than your 80% efficient furnace if you move to a new house within the payoff period. And depending on which furnace you choose, the payoff period may be surprising long!) You need to consider a number of factors such as your climate, how long you plan to own your home, and whether rebates for a high-efficiency furnace are available.
